They are not needed b ut they are still beautiful to watchOne of my favorite things about FFX was that you could buy all of the CGI cutscenes and watch them as many times as you wantCutscenes: In-Engine Vs. CGI
no. not needed.
Metal Gear Solid didn't need CGI on the original Playstation so no, it is not needed. Still, it doesn't mean CGI is always a bad thing. If used well, it can really enhance a story.
not needed, but they still look great.
i think, answering my own question, that mass effect and too human prove they arent needed to tell great stories
Not need, but I'm not going to fuss about it if they are there. Some developers like CGI some like in-engine, I like em all.

I wouldn't really consider them great stories, maybe for this gen since it seems like a good story is pretty nonexistant, but there are way better stories that are advanced through in-engine cutscenes from last gen.

Ok that's your opinion then.
In-engine cutscenes pos advantages as far as disc space is concerned.

Yes and most other Bioware games, I felt Kotor > ME in terms of...everything. Great storytelling is pretty much dead this gen.
In-Game. Games with a lot of cgi seem to make the player want to reach the next cut scene rather than complete the game for gamings sake.
I still favor CGI FMVs to RT FMVs. Most of the game do crappy in-game cutscenes, and only a handful does good ones. Still, CGI is the heart of JRPGs, and its one of the things I love from them.

Well it doesn't even need to be CGI. I loved Persona 3's anime cutscenes.
I've been trudging my way through Lost Odyssey, and I honestly dont care whether the cut scenes are in engine or CGI. I just want which ever one has less load times.
