GOTY - Overrated? --Ur Opinion

what's all the deal with games of the year? lets look at this objectively, just because a game receives g''game of the year'' does not mean it is the best game. GTA has had mnay successes and has not recieved that honor, at leats not to my knowledge.Halo was GOTY the game is great but at the time it came out i wouldnt consider it the best game.For those of you who chose your games based on a classification of ''GOTY'' then pick better, half life 2 is unbelieveable but it is not more entertaining than the mgs series, call of duty 2 and 4, and Super mario smash brothers, as well as world of warcraft if you're into rpg. Just because you dont like a game doesnt mean its not good. For instance I dont like Halflife 2 but I dont go arround calling it over-rated.GOTY - Overrated? --Ur Opinion

Credit is given where credit is due. I don't like Halo, bioshock, orange box, SMG...Basically every AAA title, yet I acknowledge the fact that they truly are well built games. Just because I don't like a certain game, doesn't mean it isn't beautiful, story strong, or has amazing features. Games that get GOTY deserve it
im not calling the game overrated. im calling the classification overrated because there are better games.
Oblivion deserved game of the year in 2006 - and was shafted by Gears of War, which, by no means is a better game. 2007, I would have chosen World in Conflict, Halo 3 or Call of Duty 4 over Super Mario Galaxy. My opinion though.

my point is that why choose 1 from hundreds, it's ridiculous. we all have different tastes so it shouldnt be one GOTY it should be at most 5. the 5 most preferred games. choosing one overall is a bit skeptic, at leats choosing one fron each console should be clear enough.

Some people go by reviews and scores/titles such as GOTY. Personally, i prefer to give it a try for myself because in the end, GOTY or not, it's all a matter of personal preference.
We are never going to find a Game of the Year that everyone can agree on, which makes me sad because it means that someone will always be angry over the rewards. Our last chance at a unanimous Game of the Year winner was a certain title that had been released in 1998, and we will probably never have an opportunity like that again.

I'm pretty sure Grand Theft Auto III won Game of the Year... are you using correct sources?

That is speaking subjectively. GOTY is awarded, usually I might add, the the best recieved game all round. A game like SOTC would never get GOTY because only about 6 people play it, no matter how artisticly amazing.
gta3 beat out halo for goty here.
But then, seeing a fully explorable city with amazing draw distances and atmosphere that brought it's grittiness right out was just the most amazing thing I had ever seen for the first time at a friends house. I actually couldn't believe what I was seeing at the time. GTA 3 was nothing like what I had expected any way, that was before I had an internet connection.It's just a mystery how a game can actually be unbeaten by any other sandbox game, apart from the sequels, and still stand up to the games of today, for example Saints Row, which just didn't capture the feeling imo. GTA3 was truly deserving of a GOTY title.
I think GotY is kinda like the Miss America Pageant... the winner meets all the criteria needed to take the crown, but sometimes she just isn't the one who you personally would have voted for... She doesn't have to be the prettiest, or the most well-spoken, or the best educated or whatever - she's the one the judges feel best represents the title.... GotY works the same way...

Then it's totaly justified.
Halo hasn't won any GOTY awards at GS IIRC. Halo was beat by Metroid Prime, Halo 2 by World of WarCraft and Halo 3 by Super Mario Galaxy.

GOTY is a prestigous award... I just don't think their method of choosing a single title is right. I like the multi-category ones much better.
I'm pretty sure that GTAIII got GotY and Halo did not. At least on GS.
